AquaPro Pressure Washing served several cities and appeared in searches for none of them except their own suburb. Competitors held the map pack with listings at addresses that did not exist. Sixty five days later AquaPro ranked organically across eight service areas and appeared in the local three pack throughout the territory, without a single fake location.
How local rankings are decided
Google has been reasonably open about this. Three factors drive local results.
- Relevance. How well your profile and site match what was searched. This is the part you control most directly.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher or the place they named. You cannot change this, and it is the strongest of the three. It is why chasing a ranking in a city forty miles away is usually wasted effort.
- Prominence. How well known and well regarded the business is, drawn from reviews, links, citations and general web presence.
The practical consequence is that local SEO is largely about maximising relevance and prominence within the radius where distance still allows you to compete. Accepting that boundary saves a lot of money.
Google Business Profile, done properly
The profile matters more than the website for map results, and most are half filled in. Working through it in order:
- Primary category. The single highest impact field on the profile. Pick the most specific one that matches your main service. "Roofing contractor" not "contractor". Add secondary categories for genuine additional services only.
- Service areas. Define them honestly. Listing thirty cities when you work in four dilutes relevance in all thirty.
- Services and products. List each service separately with its own description. These are matched against queries and most businesses leave them empty.
- Photographs. Real ones, from real jobs, added regularly. Geotagging is a myth, Google strips the data. Recency and volume are what register.
- Hours, including holidays. Wrong hours produce a specific and visible penalty in the form of customer complaints.
- Q and A. You are allowed to ask and answer your own questions, and should. Left empty, it fills with speculation from strangers.
- Posts. Modest direct effect, but they keep the profile active and take up more space in the results panel.
Service area pages that are not spam
This is where most local SEO goes wrong. The template approach, one page per town with the name swapped, has been recognized and discounted for years and now risks looking like doorway pages.
A location page earns its place when it says something true that could not be said about anywhere else. On the AquaPro project each page carried the actual neighborhoods covered, the specific surface and weather conditions that affect the work there, jobs completed in that area with photographs, and local pricing factors such as access or water restrictions.
That is genuinely more work than running a template. It is also the difference between eight pages that rank and eight pages that get ignored. The test is simple: if you cannot write two paragraphs that are true only of that location, do not make the page.
Then link them properly. Each location page should link to the services offered there and to neighboring areas, so the site reads as one authority on a territory rather than a stack of unrelated pages.
Citations and consistency
Your name, address and phone number should be byte for byte identical everywhere they appear. Not roughly the same. Identical. "Suite 4" and "Ste 4" are two different addresses to a matching algorithm.
The list worth doing, in order: Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook, your industry associations, your trade body, your local chamber of commerce, and the two or three directories that actually matter in your trade. That is most of the available value.
Beyond that, mass directory submission is a service sold to people who do not know it stopped working. Fix inconsistencies rather than adding volume, and start by searching your own phone number to see what turns up.
Reviews, and how to actually get them
Reviews influence both rankings and the click. Two things matter more than the total: recency and response.
A profile with twenty reviews including four from the last two months outperforms one with two hundred that stopped in 2023. Steadiness signals an operating business.
What works to get them: ask in person at the moment the customer is happiest, which is at completion, then follow with a text containing the direct link. Not an email. Not next week. The request has to be easy and immediate.
Respond to every review, including the bad ones, briefly and without defensiveness. Prospects read the responses more carefully than the reviews, because responses are the only part you cannot fake. Never buy reviews. Google detects patterns, competitors report them, and the penalty removes the profile.
Ranking across several locations
For a business genuinely covering multiple areas, the structure that works:
- One strong page per service, describing the service properly.
- One page per location, with real local content as described above.
- Service plus location pages only where the search volume justifies them and you can write something distinct.
- Internal links tying locations to services and neighboring areas together.
- One Google Business Profile per genuine physical location, never one per target town.
That last point is where businesses get themselves suspended. A virtual office, a mailbox or a friend's address is not a location, and reinstating a suspended profile is far harder than earning the ranking honestly in the first place.
What gets you suspended
- Keywords stuffed into the business name field. Very common, easily reported, and it invalidates the listing.
- Addresses at mailboxes, virtual offices or residential properties you do not operate from.
- Multiple profiles for the same business at the same address.
- Reviews from staff, family or purchased accounts.
- Categories chosen for reach rather than accuracy.
All of these work briefly. Competitors in local markets watch each other closely and report constantly, and a suspension costs you the rankings you had as well as the ones you were cheating for. It is not worth it, and it is the reason I turn down clients who ask for it.
