How to Write Website Copy That Actually Converts Visitors Into Customers

Most small business websites talk about themselves too much. Here's the copywriting framework that turns browsers into buyers — without sounding salesy.

The biggest mistake small business owners make with their website copy is making it all about themselves. 'We've been in business for 20 years. We're family-owned. We're passionate about quality.' Nobody cares — yet.

Your visitors arrive with one question: 'Can you solve my problem?' Your copy needs to answer that immediately, in plain language, above the fold.

The framework: Start with the problem your customer has. Then present yourself as the guide who can solve it. Show them what success looks like. Then give them a clear next step.

Use 'you' more than 'we.' Write at a 6th-grade reading level. Use short sentences. Break up walls of text. Every paragraph should earn its place by moving the reader closer to taking action.

Your headline is the most important sentence on your page. It should communicate what you do, who you do it for, and why it matters — in under 10 words. Test multiple versions and see which one resonates.
